BIRMINGHAM WHEELS ROLLER SPEED CLUB
The Skate-Smart Program
INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUALS, TEACHERS, YOUTH WORKERS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
The Skate-Smart programme has been running successfully in schools, community halls, outdoors and leisure centers for over 15 years. It was originally formed with the support of Sport England as an after school activity, and has since developed into part of the school PE curriculum across the country. Skate-Smart has been very popular with pupils who would not normally participate in regular PE lessons, building self-esteem and confidence.
The Federation of Inline Speed Skating, who are the governing body for inline and roller skate racing in Great Britain, recognize Skate-Smart as their sanctioned basic teaching programme and all coaches are CRB checked, fully insured and are qualified to a minimum of the National Governing Body’s Level 2 coaching accreditation.
Our objectives are to teach children/adults skating skills in a well-controlled environment and prepare them for the hazards they may face if skating in public areas. Time is given at the start of the session to educate pupils on the correct way to wear all safety equipment. There are four phases to achieve, each consisting of six individual modules, before pupils are awarded their certificate.
The Skate-Smart programme is designed to cater for all ages and abilities. The four phases start with basic skating movements, through to advanced skating skills and include cleaning and maintaining equipment. The programme requires a flat surface of a good size, i.e. playground/sports hall or any similar venue. Skates, helmets and safety equipment are provided along with the appropriate number of coaches for each group.
Skate-Smart can also offer a taster session of up to one and a half hours. Costs are based on a minimum of 24 skaters with a maximum of 32 skaters with two coaches per session. There is now also the opportunity for one to one lessons and smaller groups with one coach. This offers a good opportunity for pupils to have an introduction and receive more attention during the Skate-Smart programme.
